My wife and I have the tradition of celebrating the end of the old year in the night from 30-31st of December so that we can start the new year without a hangover and a positive energy. Looking back at 2023:
2023 was a year full of life. Our son developed from a tiny guy who barely spoke to a tiny guy who tells stories from his life. The father of my wife lives on in our memory. We did go through ups and downs. But that's life, and all my experiences in the last year strengthened my belief that we can not plan. Or better that we should plan and have the flexibility to adapt.
So adaption and going on is more important. Live is an experiment, and iteration and failure are part of every experiment. Only when you don't learn from it can you call it a failure. I see it looking at babies:
Babies don't know how to speak. But to learn, they just do it.
So it's a progression of doing small things. Identify the smallest possible step, have a small learning, and keep on doing it. It reminds me of the story of Baron Munchhausen, who pulls himself out of the mud with his own hair.
When you have a self-funded, independent company or with any change initiative, the same is true. You need to identify the first minimal step you can walk by yourself and then continue walking in tiny steps, and with time, the steps become bigger and bigger.
In this sense, I wish you 2024 with many learning experiments, and I hope this publication - Building Stories - will help you identify and walk the necessary small steps in your life.
